Honey Bees
You may have heard about our famous bees. Dr Berkinshaw has been an avid bee keeper for decades and a few of his hives are kept in our beautiful garden at Annapolis Orthodontics.
To us, bees symbolize team work and an incredible sense of community. Our treatment area over looks our bee hives and we love sharing this fun part of our practice with you!

Their lives are short but busy
Worker bees live approx 6 weeks in the summer season and around 3 months during the fall and winter. Drones (male bees) live about 8 weeks. Queens typically are actively producing for 1-3 years but can live up to 5-6 years.

The Honeymoon
It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the "honeymoon".

It takes an army
In order to make a pound of honey, bees collectively have to visit 2,000,000 flowers and travel over 55,000 miles. On it's own, each bee produces just 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in their lifetime.

They recognize human faces
Honeybees can comprehend human faces the way humans do. They take parts—like eyebrows, lips, and ears—and cobble them together to make out the whole face. It’s called “configular processing,” and it might help computer scientists improve face recognition technology.

They have personalities
Researches at the University of Illinois have found that not all bees are hard workers. Within each hive, some bees are thrill-seekers while others are more timid. One study even found that honeybees can be pessimistic - which shows that to some extent, bees might have feelings.
